Privacy policy
This policy covers jiwa.fm. It is short because the site does little with personal data, and it is written to be read rather than skimmed.
What we collect
When you read a page. Your browser sends the technical information every web server receives: an IP address, the page requested, a time, a user agent string and, where your browser provides one, a referring page. This is used to serve the site and keep it working.
When you write to the desk. Whatever is in your message: your email address, your name if you sign it, and the content. Correspondence is kept so that a correction published months later can be traced back to the evidence that prompted it.
When you submit a request form. Where a request form is available on this site, it asks for a first name, a last name, an email address and a phone number, and it requires you to agree before anything is sent. Those details go to the partner responsible for handling the request. If you do not submit the form, it collects nothing.
What we do not want
We do not ask for and do not want account credentials, card numbers, bank details, identity documents or trading histories. If you send them anyway, we delete them.
Why we are allowed to do this
Serving the site and keeping it secure rests on our legitimate interest in operating it. Handling your correspondence rests on our legitimate interest in running an editorial desk, and on the fact that you chose to write to us. Passing a request to a partner rests on the consent you give at the moment of submission.
Cookies and similar technologies
The site is built as static pages and does not need cookies to display them. Where a cookie or a local storage entry is set, it exists to remember something you chose, such as a light or dark appearance. If analytics or advertising identifiers were introduced, this page would say so before they were used. Blocking or deleting all of it leaves the site fully readable.
Who else is involved
- Hosting. An infrastructure provider serves the site and necessarily processes server logs on our behalf.
- Request handling. Details submitted through a request form pass to the partner that fulfils the request. From the moment it receives them, that partner is a separate controller and its own policy governs what happens next.
- Email. Messages to the desk address are handled by our email provider.
We do not sell personal data, and we do not pass reader correspondence to the platforms we write about.
How long it is kept
Server logs are kept for a short operational period and then discarded. Correspondence is kept while a matter is open and for a reasonable period afterwards. Anything you ask us to delete is deleted unless we are required to keep it.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to ask what we hold about you, to have it corrected, to have it erased, to restrict or object to its processing, to receive a copy in a portable format, and to withdraw consent at any time without affecting what was lawful before you withdrew it.
Write to [email protected] with the word privacy in the subject line. We will ask only enough to be satisfied that you are the person the data concerns. If our answer does not satisfy you, you can complain to the data protection authority in your country.
Children
This site is not intended for anyone under 18 and we do not knowingly collect data about them.
Changes
If this policy changes, the modified date at the top of the page changes with it, and a material change is described in the text rather than slipped in quietly.
